Hi! I'm Shannon Derr, Owner & Maker of all of these colorful creations. Thank you for visiting my shop!
I bought my first tie-dye kit in the summer of 2021 and now you could say that I'm slightly obsessed.
My favorite dyes to work with are Dharma Trading Company, Grateful Dyes and Pro Chemical & Dye. I love to work with seamstresses to make my own blanks (non-dyed clothing) but I also buy from wholesale vendors and have even found great blanks at thrift stores.
At Dead End Tie Dye, we specialize in the ice-dye technique. Ice-dye uses the same dye as tie-dye but instead of mixing the powdered dye with water to apply to the blank fabric using a squeeze bottle, I use the powdered dye layered either under or over ice (depending on the effect I'm looking for) which creates a beautiful watercolor effect that is beautiful to wear.
In addition to ice-dying, I also do reverse (bleach) dye. For most fabrics, I'm able to use a product called OUT® White Brite® Laundry Whitener which is a non-Chlorine powder that is not as harmful to the fabric as bleach. After the color is discharged, I then follow the same process as normal where I soak the blank item in soda ash to prep it for dying and then apply the dye and ice combination and wait for it to batch for 24-48 hours.
New, upcycled, custom, personal items...you name it! Feel free to reach out if you have something special in mind for your own tie-dye creation.
I would LOVE to make it for you. Customs and Made-to-Order items are my jam, baby.
Dead End Tie Dye is based in Tempe, Arizona so it gets pretty warm during the summer. In the fall, winter and spring, you can find me at local events around the Phoenix valley.
When I'm not dyeing pretty, I'm usually out in the woods with my dogs and my husband or at a music festival or fishing. Basically, anywhere fun.
